The number of firms declared bankrupt in the first six months of this year reached 3,351, compared with 3,840 in 2008 as a whole, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

In June alone, the courts declared 520 institutions and companies bankrupt, an increase of 60% on the year-earlier period.
