Dutchman leads Dakar Rally for lorries

Dutch truck driver Gerard de Rooy is currently leading the truck category in the Dakar Rally, despite losing the latest stage to his closest rival, the Russian Firdaoes Kabirov.

De Rooy is currently just 13 seconds ahead of Kabirov.
If he can stay ahead until the finish in Buenos Aires on January 18, he will follow Hans Stacey on to the winner’s podium. Dutchman Stacey won in 2007.
The Dakar rally was transfered from Africa to South America because of the threat of terrorism and covers 9,574km through Argentina and Chile .
Last year it was cancelled for the first time in its 30-year history because of security fears after four French tourists were murdered just before the start.
