Dutch savers move masses of money
One quarter (25%) of the money in Dutch savings accounts was moved in October, according to figures from national statistics agency CBS on Tuesday.
Of the €255bn in savings accounts, €61bn was withdrawn from accounts and €62.5bn was deposited. This is far more than in previous months when the figure was 10% to 15%, says the CBS.
CBS economist Michiel Vergeer says this is ‘a very remarkable shift’. He says the figures suggest savers are spreading their risk over a number of banks because of the financial crisis. This means more of their money falls under the government guarantee to pay back the first €100,000 on each savings account.
The Dutch central bank told the Financieele Dagblad on Tuesday ‘it is reasonable to assume’ savers are spreading their money. ‘More than that I cannot say, because we do not ask banks or the public about money movements,’ he told the paper.
