MPs back central face scan data-base

A majority of MPs are in favour of cabinet plans to save the fingerprints and face scans of everyone in the Netherlands above the age of five in a single data-base.

The information is needed to meet European Union rules for passports.
In a debate on Thursday evening, MPs said they still have concerns about the security of the centralised data storage system where information about passport-holders will be stored. At present the information it is kept at around 600 locations.
Junior home affairs minister Ank Bijleveld told parliament that the new system will have the most stringent possible protection against hacking and misuse.
The cabinet says it will allow the public prosecution department to use the data-base ‘to trace and prosecute those guilty of crimes and to investigate activities that pose a threat to the safety of the state’.
Parliament will debate the database again at a later date.
