Government cracks down on property fraud

The government aims to stamp out fraud in the property sector, justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin said in a tv programme on Sunday.

The minister announced plans for closer cooperation between the public prosecution department, the tax authorities, the financial fraud detection unit and the police.
An intelligence-gathering centre for the sector will be set up as well as a warning system to help solicitors identify dodgy deals. Estate agents, valuers and notaries will be compelled to open up their dealings for scrutiny.
The sector has been hit by a series of fraud cases in the past few years. Until now the chance of successfully prosecuting perpetrators is poor, due to a lack of transparency.
