EU works on crisis action plan

The European Commission and EU countries are currently working on a joint action plan which would create a €130bn fund to tackle the current financial crisis.

Under the proposal, every European member state would reserve 1% of its gross national product to help their national economy. For the Netherlands this would amount to over €6bn, the Volkskrant says.
The paper says a European Commission spokesman has stressed that the exact extent of the rescue package is still being negotiated.
Almost all the EU states are currently working on ways to fight the economic downturn. A coordinated approach would increase the effectiveness of these measures, the paper says.
The plan is similar to a proposal by the Dutch last month which suggested every EU state should set aside 3% of its gross national product to rescue the banking sector. This scheme was eventually rejected.
