Dutch taken to safety in Bangkok

Between 40 and 50 Dutch people stranded at Bangkok airport when thousands of demonstrators stormed the building to protest against the Thai government were taken to safety in the Dutch embassy in the capital, reports ANP news service on Wednesday.

The Dutch travellers were taken by bus to the embassy on Tuesday evening when the airport was besieged by the demonstrators, according to a spokesman for the Dutch embassy in Bangkok. From there they were transferred to local hotels.
Most of the Dutch had been on holiday on the southern island of Samui and were due to fly back to the Netherlands with China Airlines and the Taiwanese airline EVA Air. A flight by the Dutch airline KLM was able to depart on Tuesday night.
Amsterdam’s Schiphol cancelled two flights to Bangkok on Wednesday, reports ANP. No decision has yet been made about a third plane which is scheduled to depart on Wednesday night.
The Suvarnabhumi airport has been closed and it is uncertain when it will reopen, reports the BBC. The airport’s management said it could not guarantee passengers safety following Tuesday night’s occupation by protestors who had hoped to intercept Thai prime minister Somchai Wongsawat as he returned from an Asia-Pacific summit in Peru, reports the BBC. However his flight was been diverted elsewhere.
