Aegon asks for $1bn American support

Insurance company Aegon has asked the American government for capital support of over $1bn, a spokesman told Tuesday’s Financieele Dagblad.

The money represents 1% of Aegon’s total American activities, worth about $125bn, and is needed to ensure the company has ‘maximum financial flexibility’, the spokesman told the FD.
‘This is part of our strategy to ensure Aegon has the strongest capital position possible,; Aegon spokesman Greg Tucker told Reuters news agency. The money would be used for its US operations, Tucker told Reuters.
Earlier this month Aegon got a €3bn capital injection from the Dutch government. Aegon shares fell 10% to €3.46 on Monday in line with the decline of its American peers.
