Two jailed for Probo Koala waste dumping

Two men have been sentenced to jail for five and 20 years in Ivory Coast for their role in the dumping of 500 tonnes of toxic waste from the ship Probo Koala in 2006.

The waste, owned by Amsterdam-based oil trader Trafigura, is said to have killed 17 people and made tens of thousands ill.
No one from Trafigura was on trial because the company reached a €152m settlement with the Ivory Coast authorities last year.
The heaviest sentence went to the owner of the local firm which was responsible for dumping the waste at several locations around the port city of Abidjan. Seven other people were found not guilty for their role in the affair.
Two other court cases are also pending in connection with the scandal – one in London and one in Amsterdam, where the Probo Koala was moored for a time before heading for Africa.
