Icesave customers bring in the bailiffs

The website of Icelandic internet bank Icesave Nederland was taken off-line on Wednesday as a number of customers attempted to have its assets sequestered, reports news agency ANP.

A group of savers, representing some €250,000 in savings, have brought in bailiff firm NIB to try to recover their money now access to the bank has been cut off.
The website now carries a news release from the Dutch central bank saying talks are under way with the Icelandic authorities.
Estimates of how many Dutch people have savings with Icesave, which launched in the Netherlands in May quoting high interest rates, run from 50,000 to 120,000 people.
Talks to recover savings
On Tuesday evening, the Dutch central bank said it is in talks with the Icelandic authorities to try to help recover savings.
Icesave is part of the Landsbanki group which has run into financial problems and is now under government protection.
Dutch savers’ money should fall partly under the Dutch and partly under the Icelandic guarantee schemes, says the Volkskrant.
This means Iceland would be responsible for the first €20,887 and the Dutch government would cover the rest, up to the new maximum of €100,000.
The British authorities are also working on a similar arrangement with Landsbanki, the paper says. Icesave has some 300,000 clients in Britain.
