PSV start where they left off: at the top

Reigning champions PSV of Eindhoven crushed FC Utrecht 5-1 on Saturday to top the premier league after the opening games of the 2008-2009 season got underway this weekend.

The Eindhoven club’s convincing away victory was in stark contrast to the poor performances of their main rivals Ajax of Amsterdam and Feyenoord of Rotterdam, both of whom lost.
Ajax under their new manager, former national team coach Marco van Basten, splashed out 30 million euros on new players in the summer. But that couldn’t save them from a 2-1 away defeat by Willem II of Tilburg on Saturday.
Van Basten told reporters that he was ‘very disappointed’ and that there was still ‘a lot of work to do. Ajax had to play the last part of the game with 10 men after midfielder Evander Sno was sent off for elbowing an opponent.
Yesterday, Feyenoord were no match for the giant killers Heracles of Almelo. The home club beat Feyenoord 3-1. The Rotterdammers were down to 10 men after 30 minutes following the sending off of midfielder Jonathan Guzman, who struck an opponent.
