Wintry weather causes record jams
The wintry weather caused serious problems for commuters and air travellers on Tuesday morning with jams of up to 30 km in places.
By 8.30 there were 120 traffic jams with a total length of 888 km, making it the second worst-day on record, according to motoring organisation ANWB.
Some flights to and from Schiphol airport were delayed because of the snow, the airport authorities said. On a normal day, 60 aircraft an hour arrive at Schiphol but that has been cut to 45 as airport workers try to keep the runways clear, news agency ANP reported.
On the roads there have been dozens of accidents in the slippery conditions, but there were few physical injuries, a police spokesman told ANP. In particular, the roads round Rotterdam were busy, the ANWB said.
Train travel from Rotterdam station was also disrupted for a time because of the snow.
The weather is set to remain unchanged for the rest of today and into Wednesday, the KNMI weather bureau said.
