Firms to pay for subsidence caused by mining

Salt mining firm Frisia Zout and gas company Vermillion have agreed to pay for damages caused by subsidence in north-western Friesland.

The ground level in the area has dropped by some 33 cm because of salt and gas extraction.
This means extra money must be spent to keep the area from flooding. A spokesman for Frisia said the deal could cost it €20m.
