What to do in the Ardennes?

Rochefort

Rochefort is dominated by the ruins of the 11th century castle which tower over the town. Originally from the 11th century, the fort was home to noble families such as the Montaigus and the De La Marcks. The nearby red marble quarries of St. Remy, and Rochefort Abbey, a Trappist monastery, which operates a brewery, are also worth a visit.

Castle of Bouillon

The town of Bouillon on the Semois is a beautiful medieval town in the Ardennes and a must see.  Wander through the old streets, visit the local brewery and enjoy a drink at a pavement cafe in the city centre. However, the true eye-catcher of Bouillon is the castle that dominates the town. The complex was commissioned by Godefroid de Bouillon in the 8th century and includes a throne room and torture chambers. Don’t forget to climb the towers for a beautiful view across the town and surrounding countryside.

Bastogne war museum

It was in Bastogne that the Allies won the crucial Battle of the Bulge during World War II which paved the way to the end of the war. The museum focuses on the causes, events and consequences of WWII through an interactive exhibition, complete with personal stories and sound effects!

Durbuy

With its 11,000 inhabitants, Durbuy is the smallest town in Belgium. You may be able to walk through in a few minutes, but this does not mean that there is not a lot to experience. Durbuy has been around since the Middle Ages and when you walk through the winding cobblestoned alleys, you can really feel its history. In summer, a maze is built in the nearby village of Barvaux – the ideal family outing during your stay.
