Top lawyer Inez Weski will find out later today if she is to be remanded in custody following her arrest on Friday for allegedly helping gangland boss Ridouan Taghi communicate with the outside world.

Weski, 68, is Taghi’s lawyer in the long-running Marengo case and was accused by the public prosecution department on Friday of being a member of a criminal organisation and of breaking secrecy rules. Her home and office were both searched by police as part of the inquiry.

The arrest has led to Tuesday’s sitting in the Marengo court case being postponed.

The Marengo case is one of the biggest murder trials in the history of the Netherlands. The best known of the 17 suspects is Ridouan Taghi, 43, for several years the Netherlands’ most wanted man, who is accused of ordering six assassinations between 2015 and 2017 in the so-called ‘Mocro mafia’ drugs war.

Last month lawyers representing the crown witness in the case pulled out but did not go into details why.

However, earlier in March the Dutch safety research institute OVV published a damning report on the murder of three people involved in the Marengo case: the brother of the crown witness, his lawyer Derk Wiersum and television crime reporter Peter R de Vries.
