Speed skater Patrick Roest delivered the Netherlands its 100th gold medal at the world single distance championships in Heerenveen on Thursday night, as he clinched the 5,000 metres title.
It was Roest’s first ever individual world title in an individual single distance event. The Dutchman had previously won three silver medals, a bronze and a Team Pursuit gold at the world championships.
In the women’s competition, Norway’s outright favourite Ragne Wiklund beat the Dutch Olympic Champion Irene Schouten into silver position in the 3000 metres.
The team spring titles for men and women were both won by Canada, with the Netherlands taking silver in the men’s event.
Friday features the team pursuit and the 500 metres for both men and women, and Saturday the 1000 metres and mass start finals take place. On Sunday the 1,500 metres for both sexes take place, followed by the 10,000 metres for men and the 5000 metres for women.
