Museum appeals for new interpretations of Girl with a Pearl Earring

The Mauritshuis in The Hague is calling on people worldwide to provide the museum with a replacement for Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring to make up for her upcoming stay in the Dutch capital.

From 10 February, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will host the largest Vermeer exhibition in history. As many as 28 paintings by the master are coming to Amsterdam, including the Mauritshuis’ View of Delft, Diana and Her Nymphs and the Girl with a Pearl Earring.

All (art) forms are allowed: a photo, a drawing, a painting, sculpted, embroidered or knitted, as long as the photo of your creation is sent in digitally, the Mauritshuis said.

The best photos submitted will be digitally displayed in a loop on the spot where the Girl normally hangs. Selected images will be hung elsewhere in the room along with information about the painting and ‘why she is an inspiration for many.’

Only photos of the efforts sent to the museum’s Instagram account @mygirlwithapearl will be accepted. The museum will try to show as many photos as possible between February 6 and June 4, when the Girl will return to The Hague.

Earlier this month, the Girl was removed from public display after climate activists attempted to glue themselves to the painting. They were later jailed for two months.
