Motorists around Utrecht have been warned to expect delays for the rest of Monday after a multiple pile-up involving four lorries on the A27.

The ANWB advised people travelling to the city from the south to consider postponing their journey after the northbound carriageway towards Almere was completely closed by the accident near the Rijnsweerd intersection.

Five cars were also hit in the collision and at least two people have been taken to hospital, RTV Utrecht reported.

One of the lorries ploughed through the central reservation at the point where the A27 meets the A28, causing the A27 southbound carriageway to be closed briefly.

Police said it would take until mid-afternoon to clear the northbound carriageway of debris and repair the guard rail. Traffic on other routes around the city, including the A28 and A2, is expected to be heavily delayed.
