MPs have filed an official complaint against FvD leader Thierry Baudet for refusing to declare his outside interests and earnings, which may result in his suspension for a month, RTL Nieuws reports.

MPs must register any income they receive in addition to their salary as an MP in a public register to avoid possible conflicts of interest. Outside earnings also impact on MPs’ salaries.

Baudet, who is director of Forum voor Democratie BV and THPB BV as well as an author and occasional lecturer, has so far refused to officially acknowledge his other work.

The integrity college, the body tasked with monitoring corruption, concluded in March that Baudet wasn’t keeping to the rules and should declare his outside jobs.

He did not do so, prompting an official complaint by MPs from eight parties.

‘These are democratic rules and that means everyone has to keep to them, Baudet included,’ D66 MP Jan Peternotte told the broadcaster. ‘I hope he will see sense.’

‘He is bound to kick up a fuss but these are the rules. He has to be transparent about his other money making activities,’ GroenLinks MP Jesse Klaver said.

If the complaint is upheld Baudet will face a month’s suspension. He will be able to vote in parliament but not to speak.

In a reaction, Baudet told broadcaster NOS that MPs are ‘obsessed’ with public scrutiny and that ‘the real corruption in politics is in the political jobs carousel’.
