A 54-year-old Dutchman was shot while on a wild boar hunt in the German region of Rheinland-Pfalz at the weekend, after being mistaken for one of the animals.

The victim was shot by a fellow Dutchman while acting as a beater to flush out the boar. He was seriously wounded and taken to hospital but is not in a critical condition, German police said.

The local force have started a criminal investigation into the 65-year-old hunter and have confiscated his weapon.
