Ronald Koeman has picked his brother Erwin to be his assistant when he takes over the helm at the Dutch national team from Louis van Gaal, after the Qatar World Cup.

Koeman was national team coach from 2018 to 2020, when he oversaw the first qualification for a summer tournament in six years, but then left to take the reins at Barcelona, which was not a success.

The Koeman brothers earlier worked together at Southampton and Everton.

Koeman, 59, has also appointed Patrick Lodewijks to head up the keepers’ training programme with Oranje. All three have signed a contract up to and including the 2026 World Cup.

‘I have worked with Erwin and Patrick before, so you know what each other has to offer,’ Ronald Koeman told the KNVB website.

Erwin Koeman, 60, has 31 caps for the Netherlands and was part of the team that won the 1988 European championship together with his brother.
