Suzanne Schulting completed the set of individual short track medals in Beijing with a bronze at the 1,500m as South Korea’s Choi Min-Jeong successfully defended her title.

Schulting was pipped on the line by Italian Arianna Fontana, who won her 11th Olympic medal to confirm her status as the most successful short track skater in the history of the Games.

The 24-year-old tried to move to the front with three laps to go but was nudged wide by China’s Yutong Han just as Choi opened up a decisive lead. Schulting tried to pass Fontana on the final lap but finished 3/1000ths of a second behind her.

‘I’m disappointed with bronze because I felt so strong today,’ said Schulting. ‘When I was pushed wide I thought I could pass on the outside, but that’s short track.

‘I lost my speed, I nearly fell, but I managed to save the medal. The fact I was only a few thousandths behind at the finish line shows how strong I was.’

Xandra Velzeboer finished fifth in her first individual Olympic final, while Rianne de Vries was eliminated in the semi-finals. Schulting and Velzeboer were also members of the Netherlands’ gold medal-winning relay team.

The men’s 5000m relay team finished runners-up in the B final to claim seventh place overall.
