All travellers from the US to the Netherlands will have to go into quarantine for at least five days from December 30, and have a negative coronavirus test to enter the country, the Dutch foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The measure has been implemented on the advice of public health institute RIVM. The US has shifted from being classified as a high risk country, to one with a very high risk, hence the introduction of quarantine. On Monday, a record 440,000 coronavirus infections were registered in the US.

Quarantine should last 10 days but that can be shortened if people have a negative test from a regional health board centre after the first five. There are some exemptions to the quarantine rules including cross-border work, funerals and necessary family visits.

Compulsory quarantine was introduced just before Christmas for people travelling to the Netherlands from Britain.
