Coronavirus has had a negative impact on the lives of almost half the Netherlands’ teenagers and young adults, but 43% say it has had both negative and positive effects, according to research by national statistics agency CBS.

Most miss meeting friends and family, especially doing things away from home. But while 53% of the over-18s said the impact of coronavirus had been only negative, only 38% of teenagers saw just the negative side.

Almost half the youngsters in the survey said they have felt more stress about school and college, but, at the same time, around 17% report feeling less stress about school and exams. That figure rose to 23% among teenagers in pre college (havo) and pre university (vwo) school streams.

The research was carried out between February and April and involved 8,000 youngsters. At the time, there was a curfew and schools, sports clubs and cafes were largely closed.
