At least 18 branches of the Albert Heijn supermarket chain were unable to open in Amsterdam on Friday morning because their doors and roller blinds had been glued shut.

Some workers had to wait up to two hours before the doors could open and they could enter the premises, RTL Nieuws reported. The shops normally open at 8am.

The supermarkets were spread throughout the city

Police say that so far they have no idea what the reason is behind the action and are now investigating. ‘We will secure surveillance camera footage and check that,’ a spokesman said. ‘But unfortunately there were no letters or stickers suggesting a motive.’

There are over 100 branches of AH in the Dutch capital.
