Ajax’ Champions League campaign got off to a stunning start on Wednesday evening with a 1-5 win over Portuguese club Sporting CP, including four goals for debutant Sébastien Haller.
Haller signed for Ajax from West Ham for a club record fee of €22.5m last winter but was left off the list for European competition due to an administrative error.
Steven Berghuis, who moved to Ajax this season from arch rivals Feyenoord, scored the fifth.
Ajax next meet Beşiktaş of Turkey, who lost 2-1 to Dortmund on Wednesday night, on September 28 at home.
Elsewhere in European competition, PSV will meet Real Sociedad on Thursday night in their first group match in the Europa League.
AZ, Feyenoord and Vitesse are all taking part in the new European Conference League. Feyenoord had a goalless draw against Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday night, while AZ and Vitesse are in action on Thursday evening.
