Ajax’ Champions League campaign got off to a stunning start on Wednesday evening with a 1-5 win over Portuguese club Sporting CP, including four goals for debutant Sébastien Haller.

Haller signed for Ajax from West Ham for a club record fee of €22.5m last winter  but was left off the list for European competition due to an administrative error.

Steven Berghuis, who moved to Ajax this season from arch rivals Feyenoord, scored the fifth.

Match report and highlights

Ajax next meet Beşiktaş of Turkey, who lost 2-1 to Dortmund on Wednesday night, on September 28 at home.
