Arno Kamminga has won silver in the 100 metres breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympics in his first ever final of a major international tournament.

Kamminga, 25 and a former life guard from Katwijk, completed the race in 58 seconds, just behind British swimmer and title holder Adam Peaty who won the gold in 57.37.

He becomes only the third Dutch man to win an individual swimming medal, following Wieger Monsonides (1960) and Pieter van den Hoogenband (2000 and 2004), the current Dutch chef de mission.

‘It has not yet sunk in,’ Kamminga told reporters immediately after the race. ‘I’m speechless. I knew I was capable of it… but you have to actually do it.’

Meanwhile, a fourth member of the Dutch Olympic squad has tested positive for coronavirus and has to go into isolation. Tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer had reached the second round of the men’s doubles when he failed the test.

Four athletes and two support staff have now tested positive.
