Coronavirus cases up for second day in a row, patient numbers down

The number of coronavirus infections increased for the second day running while hospital cases continued to fall, latest figures show.

The daily total was up by 240 at 5,658 and nearly 1,000 more than the figures for Tuesday and Wednesday. A week ago there were still around 7,000 infections being recorded per day.

There are currently 2,201 Covid-19 patients in hospital, 76 fewer than on Wednesday, while the number in intensive care fell from 606 to 595 in the 24-hour period.

Infections in Amsterdam were 20% higher than on Wednesday at 395, while Rotterdam had 326 new cases (up 14.4%) and 172 were recorded in The Hague (up 1.2%).

Another 89 patients were confirmed to have died from coronavirus as the death toll continues to rise. In the last seven days an average of 77 deaths have been recorded, compared to 73 a week earlier.
