Student unions LSVb and FNV Young & United have launched a joint campaign against the high cost of student accommodation in five popular university towns and cities.

The campaign kicked off on Monday in Wageningen and will move to Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Groningen and Utrecht. The student groups consider €400 a month to be a reasonable rent, but say that in some cities students are being asked to pay upwards of €700.

A quarter of students leaving university have a debt of at least €40,000, now that grants have been abolished, the LSVb said.

Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, city officials have been asked by councillors to explain why a hotel is being allowed to offer rooms of no more than six m2 to expats and students for €799 a month.

The CityHub hotel has been hit by the downturn in tourism and is now offering its capsule rooms for up to six weeks. The hotel is advertising the offer, without mention of the time limit, on room rental website kamernet.nl.
