The KNMI weather bureau issued a code orange weather warning for the southern four provinces on Saturday, saying temperatures are likely to reach an ‘extremely warm’ 35 Celsius, at least.

Code yellow is in operation for the rest of the country, with the exception of the Wadden Sea islands, where there are strong winds and temperatures in the high 20s.

Similar temperatures are expected until at least Wednesday at week, although the KNMI now says there will be more cloud than forecast earlier, and that there may be the odd thunderstorm in the south on Sunday evening. Most places, however, will remain dry.

The hot sunny weather means the Netherlands will be in the grip of an official heatwave this weekend – defined as a five-day period of temperatures over 25 Celsius, of which three are over 30 Celsius.

From Thursday there will be more rain, and it will be slightly cooler, although temperatures will still be in the high 20s, possibly higher in the south.

The ANWB motoring organisation said it expecting plenty of traffic on the roads this weekend, particularly in coastal regions as people head for the sea.

Some resorts have been virtually inaccessible in recent days because of the good weather, and the fact so many people are holidaying at home this year.

Local officials have closed roads and car parks in an effort to manage the crowds, and urged beach goers to travel by bike.
