A 26-year-old man has been given a jail sentence for a violent attack on a policeman who had broken up a wedding procession he attended, reports Rijnmond broadcaster.

Shahid B., whose full name had not been given, hit policeman Gert Jan de Jonge with such violence that he knocked him out. The policeman has reportedly been unable to return to full time work since the attack last August.

A wedding procession of cars had been driving through central Rotterdam causing reported nuisance, but when one car was pulled over and the driver arrested, wedding guest Shahid B. attacked the policeman and fled.

He has been sentenced to 18 months in jail, six of which are suspended, and the court has then ordered him to be treated in a special clinic for people with learning difficulties. He also has to pay a fine of €4,000 to the victim, according to the Telegraaf.
