Some 300 stranded passengers were forced to sleep on camp beds at Eindhoven airport on Wednesday night after fog brought air travel to a standstill.

In some places visibility had been reduced to as little as 100 metres, according to the KNMI weather bureau.

Flights to the Canary Islands, Greece and Israel were among those affected. Some services were also redirected to Brussels and Cologne.

The airport said air traffic is getting back to normal on Thursday, but it will still take several hours before all the stranded passengers can fly out to their holidays.
