A Jewish family from the village of Hippolytushoef in Noord Holland, who have been terrorised by local youngsters for years, are to be given security cameras by the local council, the Telegraaf reports.

The Schmidt family have lived in the village of 4,000 people for 20 years and have been the victim of harassment dozens of times.

‘We have had a tree trunk put through our window, our gate has been vandalised and they have tried to break down the door with a shopping cart. They have drawn swastikas in the snow on our car with the name of our son,’ father of five Wouter Schmidt told the paper.

He also said youngsters gave a Nazi salute and told one of his daughters that ‘Jews like her ought to be gassed’. Three weeks ago a firework bomb exploded near the family home.

The camera has to ‘prevent and inform’, mayor Rian van Dam is quoted as saying. ‘We cannot accept this. We need each other’s eyes and ears to prevent this. So I call on people to report this sort of thing immediately.’

Apart from the camera, police will be in daily contact with the family. Youth workers will also be more active and anti-discrimination organisation will visit local schools.
