One man has been killed and second person seriously injured in a shooting incident outside a pizzeria on the Hugo de Grootplein in the west of Amsterdam.

The shooting took place at 15.45 when the square was crowded with people. An eyewitness from the nearby bakery said she heard four shots ‘and panic broke out’.’The wife of the man who was shot started to scream really hard,’ she said.

The man who died was the owner of the pizzeria, locals said. ‘I was just talking to him half an hour before he was shot,’ one local said.

Shortly after the shooting police said they had arrested one suspect, and that shots had been fired during the arrest.

He was in a grey Volkswagen van with Belgian number plates on the Admiraal de Ruijterweg, a short distance away from the scene of the crime.

Initial reports indicated there were two people involved in the shooting.
