Police in Groningen have arrested a 33-year-old man for the murder of two cleaners at the Pathe cinema complex in the centre of the city.

The victims, a couple in their 50s named by the Telegraaf as Gina and Marinus, had worked for cleaning company Gom for some time and the cinema was their regular beat. Their bodies were found in the complex early on Saturday morning.

Ergun S was arrested in connection with the killings on Sunday. According to the Telegraaf he was hit by a police bullet during the arrest and taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police had been tipped off about his whereabouts after they released a photo of the wanted man.

S, from Rotterdam, was described by neighbours as a ‘a confused and unkempt’ man, who talked to himself. He had also been spotted by people in Groningen ‘dancing’ in the streets, the Telegraaf reported.

One neighbour told the paper S may have gone to Groningen to try and find his ex-girlfriend and young daughter. Her parents are said to live in the city.

The motive for his attack on the cleaners is thought to have been robbery.
