Police cordon at the Haaksbergen crash siteThe Dutch national wanted in Romania for the murder of an 11-year-old girl has committed suicide by driving his car into a truck, the Dutch public prosecution department said on Monday afternoon.

The man, named by Romanian media as Johannes or Joop Visscher, left Romania on Saturday, the day after the girl disappeared on her way home from school. The girl’s body was found on the edge of a corn field on Sunday. She had been strangled with her own clothing.

Dutch police have not commented on the Romanian claims, but Romanian media say Visscher, 47, was a convicted paedophile. He is believed to have visited Romania a total of four times, and his whereabouts while on other visits are now being investigated, DutchNews.nl has been told.

Earlier on Monday, Romanian police requested a European arrest warrant be issued for Visscher.
