Jan Anthonie Bruijn elected new senate leader

VVD politician Jan Anthonie Bruijn has been named the new leader of the Dutch senate.

The politician replaces Ankie Broekers-Knol, who is now junior justice minister, after not being listed for the senate as part of a policy to rejuvenate the chamber.

Bruijn won the election eventually over Ruard Ganzevoort from GroenLinks green left party, Joris Backer from the D66 liberal democrates and Toine Beukering for the far-right Forum voor Democratie. Bruijn and Ganzevoort made the last round, and Bruijn won with 34 votes to 28. Eleven votes were returned blank.

Bruijn has been an influential politician within his party for years, according to the NOS, and is a qualified doctor and university lecturer. The VVE is the joint largest party in the house, alongside the Forum voor Democratie, which nudged the largest share of votes in regional elections earlier this year.
