Dutch police arrest Rwandan genocide suspect on extradition request
The Dutch police international crimes unit on Tuesday arrested a 69-year old Rwandan man in Leersum, near Utrecht, who is suspected of being involved in the 1994 genocide in the African country.
The Rwandan authorities had requested the extradition of Venant R, said to be the regional director of a regional agricultural institute where one thousand Tutsi men, women and children were killed after seeking shelter in the compound.
The Rwandan authorities suspect R of calling soldiers and militia to the ISAR Rubona compound, who subsequently killed the refugees.
R’s request for asylum in the Netherlands was rejected by immigration officials and on appeal in 2000. It is unclear from the public prosecution department statement why he was still in the Netherlands.
The 1994 genocide in Rwanda cost the lives of approximately 800,000 civilians.
