At least three people were killed and five injured in Monday morning’s shooting on a Utrecht tram, police confirmed in the afternoon, revising down the injury total from nine.

Three of those are seriously injured, mayor Jan van Zaanen said in a short statement. ‘Our thoughts are with the victims families and the witnesses of the attack, he said.

‘We cannot exclude, in fact we are assuming, that there was a terrorist motive,’ he said. One shooter has been named but ‘we cannot exclude there being others,’ he said.

Police have circulated photographs of the man suspected of carrying out the shooting, whom they named as 37-year-old Gökmen Tanis, born in Turkey.

Police have told the public not to approach the suspect directly, but to call the investigation hotline on 0800 6070.

Tanis is set to have a long history of petty crime and in 2013 was arrested for attempted manslaughter after firing a gun at a block of flats.

He was also recently in court on rape charges, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht said.
