Officials have found 11 Albanian nationals hidden in lorries during checks on vehicles arriving at the DFDS ferry terminal in Vlaardingen, police said on Friday.

All 184 lorries and trailers were checked for stowaways during the campaign, which took place last Tuesday. The 11 men, aged between 19 and 32, were found by sniffer dogs in three separate lorries and have been taken into detention.

They will be sent back to Albania and banned from entering the European Union for two years.

An increasing number of people are attempting to get to Britain via Dutch sea ports. This month, 50 Albanian nationals have been found hiding in lorries in Vlaardingen and last week seven Albanians were found at the Moerdijk cargo port.
