Sifan Hassan has won the Netherlands only gold medal at the European athletics championships in Berlin, by winning the 5,000 metres.

Hassan was favourite to take the race and was given an easier ride after Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter made a mistake coming up to the final round and stopped a lap too early.

It is Hassan’s second gold in Europe: she won the 1,500 metres in 2014.

Elsewhere on the track, the women’s four by 100 relay team, who were defending champions, took the silver medal behind Britain and the men took bronze in their event.

It is the first time seven different sports disciplines have held their European championships at the same time.

The Netherlands showed their dominance in open water swimming in Loch Lomond, winning a total of 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Sharon Van Rouwendaal won the 5k and 10k races before helping the Dutch take gold in 5k mixed team relay. On the final day of competition she added to her tally with a silver medal in the women’s 25k; narrowly missing out on her fourth gold by just 0.1 of a second.

The Netherlands also topped the track cycling medal table with five gold and three bronze.
