Red light for the shortest bike path in the Netherlands

The Netherlands’ shortest bike path – a two metre stretch of tarmac in the Overijssel town of Haaksbergen – is no more after council officials removed the signs indicating the short strip of road was for bikes only.

The bike path hit the headlines after local T Waanders posted a photograph of the location on Twitter.

‘I got my cycling certificate a long time ago, but could you please explain how I, as a cyclist or other road user, are supposed to behave in this situation,’ Wanders said in a post aimed at the council.

Now officials have removed the signs, saying that they too found the meaning unclear. ‘They were supposed to show that cars should not use this piece of road,’ a spokesman told RTV Oost. ‘But we’ve now decided to remove them. They caused confusion.’
