Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan has been released from prison after serving a 30-day sentence for lying to special prosecutor Robert Muller, who is investigating possible Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

In April Van der Zwaan, 33, became the first person to be sentenced as a result of Muller’s investigation, even though he had no direct links to Donald Trump’s campaign. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $20,000 (€16,000).

He admitted giving Muller false information about his connections to Rick Gates, a former member of Trump’s campaign team who is suspected of money laundering, fraud and illegally advising the Ukrainian government.

Van der Zwaan has also worked with Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign director. He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Gates and another person whom the FBI suspects is connected to Russian military intelligence.

As a non-US citizen, Van der Zwaan was released into the custody of the ICE and will now have to leave the United States in short order.
