The leader of an Iranian opposition group has been shot dead in The Hague, police confirmed to news agency ANP on Thursday afternoon.

Ahmad Mola Nissi, said to be the leader of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz (ASMLA), was killed in the city’s Jan van Riebeekstraat on Wednesday afternoon at around 17.00.

One man, seen acting suspiciously at the scene of the shooting who ran off when approached by police has been arrested, police said in a statement. He is still being questioned.

In a statement on the website ahwazona.net, the group have called on the Dutch authorities to make the investigation into his murder a priority and to take steps to ensure the safety of the group’s supporters in the Netherlands.

The ASMLA is campaigning for the independence of the eastern province of Ahwaz (Khuzistan) in Iran. It is classed as a terrorist organisation by Iran.

According to broadcaster NOS, Nissi had lived in the Netherlands for 10 years and the ASMLA has been registered with the Chamber of Trade since last year.
