With receipts up 12.5% in the first quarter of 2017, the express package delivery sector saw its highest growth rate in 10 years, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday. Courier firms benefited most from internet sales, the CBS added.
The companies reported online sales last year nearly 70% higher than in 2013. According to the CBS, 76% of the population bought at least one item online in 2016, well up on 2013 when only 33% did this.
Courier company sales have increased in every quarter since 2011. At the beginning of 2017, turnover was 37% higher than in the first three months of 2016.
The total number of courier companies in the Netherlands has also risen to 5,300, a giant 65% leap in numbers from the beginning of 2008.
