Something for everyone as opinion polls give mixed picture

Three opinion polls published at the weekend give a completely different picture about the state of the main parties, three months ahead of the general election.

The latest TNS Nipo poll puts the Socialist Party and right-wing Liberal VVD neck and neck with 29 seats each.
But the new Maurice de Hond poll, published on Sunday puts the SP firmly in the lead on 29 seats, four ahead of the VVD.
And the latest Ipsos Synovate poll out on Saturday paints a completely different picture. It says support for the VVD is up one seat at 32, stretching the party’s lead over the SP to five seats.
There is little agreement about the position of the Labour party (PvdA) and Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration PVV either.
De Hond puts the PVV in third place with 24 seats, the same as its current total. But TNS Nipo puts Wilders’ party on 19, five down on its June 2010 support.
The polls do agree on the fortunes of the Liberal democrats D66, which will make a much stronger showing in the September 12 vote. And GroenLinks, battered by its support for the austerity package and a leadership contest, is on target to lose up to half its seats.
De Hond’s poll is based on 2,500 people out of an internet sample of 40,000. TNS Nipo bases its research on a representative sample of 1,177 people and Synovate uses online and telephone research based on 1,000 people from its database.
