Tallon Griekspoor’s poor form continued as he crashed to a straight-sets defeat to world number 80 Ethan Quinn in the opening round of the Australian Open.

The Dutch number one, seeded 23rd for the Grand Slam tournament, never had a look-in against the 21-year American as he conceded seven service games to lose 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Griekspoor, who beat Quinn in five sets at last year’s French Open, complimented his opponent’s progress. “He came on a lot last year and he’s an established name in the top 100. He’s definitely someone for the future.”

The Dutchman insisted he was not struggling for fitness despite a slump in form that has seen him lose in the first round of nine of the last 12 tournaments, including the ATP tournament in Adelaide last week, where he was seeded fourth.

He called his defeat to Quinn a “total off day”. “Credit to him and the way he played and went for his shots,” Griekspoor told Eurosport.

“He got in front early in all three sets, which allowed him to play freely, as I knew he would. I just didn’t expect my own standard to be so low today.”

The result leaves Botic van de Zandschulp as the only Dutch man or woman in the singles draw. The 30-year-old will meet China’s Sjeng Juncheng in the second round, with Novak Djokovic potentially awaiting the winner in round three.
