Croatian couple on run from Slovenia arrested near Dutch border

A Croatian couple who went into hiding in the Netherlands after being sought in connection with a murder in Slovenia have been arrested across the border in Germany.

The 31-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were stopped in a car park Isterberg, near the border town of Nordhorn, on Friday evening. They were driving a car with Slovakian numberplates that turned out to have been stolen from another vehicle.

The Telegraaf reported that the couple had been living in the Netherlands prior to their arrest. Police believe they had just crossed the border from the Netherlands because strict checks are in place on the German side.

A check on the couple revealed that prosecutors in Slovenia had issued a European arrest warrant for the couple, who are suspected of beating, strangling and murdering their victim.

They spent Friday night in a police cell in Nordhorn before appearing in court the next morning, where a district judge ordered them to be transferred to prison in Oldenburg prison, where they are expected to face an extradition hearing.
