Dutch companies to receive €1bn in Trump tariff compensation

Dutch companies are set to recoup a €1 billion windfall from the Trump administration after the United States Supreme Court ruled most of his “liberation day” tariffs announced last April were illegal.

Philips, one of the first companies to claim a refund following the ruling in February, received €186 mln, which accounted for around 4% of its turnover for the second quarter of 2026.

The figures were included in the health tech giant’s latest quarterly results, which showed a 4% increase in sales compared to the same period in 2025.

The Supreme Court ordered the US government to compensate companies when it upheld a lower court’s decision that the Trump administration had wrongly used emergency powers to justify the tariffs.

Exactly how much has been paid out is unknown because the government has not published details, but experts have calculated that the top 10 Dutch exporters stand to receive more than €1 bn altogether.

Philips, which makes 40% of its turnover in North America, was one of the first Dutch companies to claim a refund. Other major exporters include Heineken, which is expected to receive between €150 mln and €350 mln, and Ahold Delaize, owner of Albert Heijn, which will get an estimated €100 mln to €300 million.

Altogether more than a quarter of a million companies have claimed refunds worth a total of $129 bn (€111 bn) from the US customs administration, in addition to the $166 bn (€143 bn) which will have to be repaid to American firms.

“We are surprised by how quickly and efficiently this has happened,” Casper Roerade of Dutch entrepreneurs’ association EvoFenedex told AD.nl.
